Y1 Friday 17th January 2020– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have written a non-chronological report about Emperor Penguins. In Maths, we have continued to explore place value.

In Science we have looked at animals that live in polar places and why they are suited to their habitats.

We have looked at Antarctica in relation to the North Pole, South Pole and the equator.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ learning facts about Emperor Penguins and writing them.

√ beginning to learn about Captain Scott.

√ exploring place value with lots of practical equipment.

√ learning about why polar animals can survive in the cold.

√ looking at maps to find the North Pole, South Pole and equator.

Family discussion questions:

  • How many expeditions did Captain Scott go on?
  • Where is Antarctica? Is it a cold or a hot place? How do you know?
  • True or false? 24 is the same as 4 tens and 2 ones.

Looking forward:

Next week we will be writing information texts about Captain Scott and his Antarctic expedition as part of English and History. In Maths, we will use place value to compare numbers.

In Science we will be experimenting to test the best materials for an explorer to wear.
