Y1 Friday 4th December 2020– Looking Back & Forth

 Y1 Friday 4th December 2020– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a great week in Year 1!

In Maths we have started to explore subtraction by taking away and crossing out.

In English we have begun to explore questions and planned instructions for how we can trap a witch.

In Science, we explored the different parts of plants through dissecting vegetables and looked at how the weather has changed from autumn to winter and what clothes we wear as it gets colder.

In PHSE we have looked at people who help us and why what they do is so important.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Practising our handwriting.

√ Showing how well we have learnt our spellings in our spelling test.

√ Learning to take away by crossing out.

√ Looking at the different parts of vegetables.

√ Writing questions for the start of our instructions.

√ Looking at the feature of instructions.

√ Recording our class and whole school songs for our Christmas CD.

√ Quilling for our Christmas cards.

√ Discussing how trees have changed from autumn to winter and how the weather is changing.

√ Decorating our Christmas post box.

Family discussion questions:

  • Can you draw 9-3 by crossing out?
  • What question could you ask a witch?
  • How have the trees changed since autumn?

Looking forward:

Next week we will write instructions for how to trap a witch.

In Maths we will continue to look at more formal subtraction number sentences.

In DT we will explore moving pictures and continue our quilling project.

Reminders:

  • Christmas Dinner day Wednesday 9th December (no crackers).

  • Christmas Jumper Day Friday 11th December (donation to the PTA) and marble jar treat.

  • Class Christmas cards to be handed into me by Friday 11th December- these will be handed out on the last week of term.

  • I am changing my book changing system- please continue to bring books in on Thursday’s but I will keep these until Friday morning (do not worry about the reading challenge- this will still be counted).

  • Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.
  • Please continue to read every night and practise the sound cards. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Thursday’s after checking Reading Diaries.
