Y4 Friday 18th September 2020 - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 18th September 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children have had another super week.  I think they’re really getting into the swing of things in Year 4.  The children are being very sensible following the rules and procedures in school.  A lot of them have completed the challenges at home – thank you for supporting this.  I loved the Pop Art.

In maths, we continued to look at place value.  We looked at rounding numbers to the nearest 10.  In the main the children were good with this.  It is a good concept to revise at home as the children can easily forget the rules.

If the ones (units)  column has

  1. 2  3  4  all round down

Or

5  6  7  8  9   all round up     - not forgetting to look at the tens to help decide which ten you will round to…..

In the afternoons; we revised the seven continents of the world and the children shared what they already knew about mountains.  Quite a few of the children shared the mountains that they had climbed or visited with their families.  We looked at Pop Art and in particular the works of Andy Warhol.  This session was to show the children how collage had progressed from Kurt Schwitters work  in the 1940s.  In science, the class went on a sound walk and identified sound sources (I think I was one of the sound sources in quite a few places!!).  We also listened to cars and discussed the Doppler effect.

Questions to ask at home:

  • What the boys from ISCA Academy do?
  • Why is Ashley Fioleck famous?
  • What is a sound source?
  • What is the special rule when rounding to the nearest 10?
  • What does the word legacy mean?
  • What is a summit?
  • Does Antarctica have a mountain range?
  • How many continents are there?  Can you name them?
  • Why is the Artic not a continent, if the Antarctic is?
  • What is the Doppler effect?  (You could ask who is Goldie?)

Looking forward:

This week, just a few of the things the children will be looking at…..

We will continue to look at the biographies in ‘Rebels Girls’ and ‘Boys who dared to be different’.  In maths, we are continuing looking at place value.  Rounding to the nearest 100, as well as working with numbers in the 1,000s.

We will plot the seven biggest mountain ranges on each of the continents, as well as look at the highest peak in each continent.

Could you please make sure that your child has their P.E. kit on for school on Friday, it is Premier Sports.  We will be outside (fingers crossed), warmer jogging trousers, spare socks and a jumper.
