Year 2 Looking Back and Forth 11 December

Friday 11th December 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 2

Looking back:

Well done Year 2! You are working so hard and having fun doing it too. This week we have written our story retell of “The Night Gardener” and these are no ready to be published for our classroom display. In maths we have been dividing by sharing. We have ensured the answers are correct by checking our working out. In PE the children finished their dance themed around a journey with Premier Sports and then performed it to me. We also had lots of time outside and used our exercise track. In history, we learned about Mary Seacole and compared her experiences with those of Florence. We then learned about Marie Curie who was a leading light in medicine around the same time There was so much more too– please ask your children to tell you about our week.

Year 2 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • The Night Gardener book
  • Performing the dance
  • Our work about Florence Nightingale
  • All of it!
  • Golden Time!

Family discussion questions:

  • Who are this week’s inspirational people? How do they help us?
  • What did Marie Curie discover?

Looking forward:

  1. Reading books are changed on Mondays – but please ensure your child has their pack with them every day
  2. Art – Christmas activities
  3. Publishing a familiar story
  4. Division
  5. Science – materials
  6. History – what have we learned so far?
  7. Please see the email from Miss Atkins about next week below:

Dear Families,

Quite a long email – sorry, but it does have some important information for you as we go in to our last week of the term.

School finishes next Friday at the usual time for your child’s class.  The pupils return on Tuesday 5th January.

We have been delighted with the amount of festive activities we have managed to do under the very strict risk assessments.  The Christmas CD is a delight and the school rang out with children singing for several weeks before the actual recording.  The CD’s are due in school the middle of next week.

Christmas lunch was a big success and many children wore Christmas hats and accessories while tucking in to their turkey.  On Monday we have a live performance of Peter Pan for the children to watch.  There will be four performances throughout the day and this has been fully risk assessed by both the company and ourselves.  Children can come in party wear on Monday if they wish. Today is Christmas jumper day and I am looking forward to seeing all the sparkly and festive designs.  Next Friday is a special video treat for our pupils which I am sure they will love.

Our bubble assemblies have been on the theme of Christmas and I have shared the Plenderleith books with the classes – a firm favourite every year because every book is about Christmas.

We didn’t think we would be able to open the Christmas Shop this year but not to be defeated the PTA and staff looked for a safe way for this to happen. The children love the opportunity to choose gifts for their families and although the PTA can’t come in to the school to sell, they have wrapped and delivered many items for the children to choose from. Thank you to all our volunteers who have helped with this. Each class will have the opportunity, with their own teacher to visit the shop and choose a present if they wish.  Things are a little different this year, however and I have highlighted the changes below for your information.

The Christmas Shop will be open next week but we are asking for all their money to be in ON MONDAY 14th. We will record how much money each child has brought in and will then make sure they get the right number of gifts when they visit the shop later in the week. We do need the correct money to be brought in as we cannot give any change – all the money has to be put in a bag and left for a few days before we can count and bank it.  To make it easier for the children to bring in the right amount of cash, every gift is £2.50—maximum 4 gifts per child.  They will not be able to buy more than four presents to ensure that the last class to visit the shop has a good choice.  If you normally purchase more than 4 gifts please talk to your child about this before they come to school, so they know who they are buying for and understand the reasons why.

Pupils will need to bring the correct amount of cash in and no change can be given.  They will need their own bag to take their gifts home in.  The gifts were brought in to school a few days ago and have had to stay untouched until we sell them.

Everything we do at the moment has to be so carefully planned and strict guidelines adhered to but through all this, I am so proud of our pupils.  School is such a lovely place to be and the classes settled from day 1 in September.  The atmosphere is positive and above all happy.  We have had a fairly smooth term, at the point of writing, and thank you to all our families for your support and understanding.  Of course, we have a fantastic team of adults in school and I am indebted to them for all their hard work and dedication to the school.

Once school finishes next Friday, if your child tests positive for Covid, and was in school during the 48 hours before their first symptoms developed, or before they took the test if they did not have any symptoms,  we are asking that you let us know so we can assist Track and Trace with close contacts in school.  Please email: head@goostrey.cheshire.sch.uk, with this information. We will then let any families, who may be affected from close contact in school know by email as soon as possible.   However, as it is the holidays, for all staff, we will only be checking our emails once a day, as DfE guidance has made it clear we are not expected to be on call 24 / 7.  Similarly, the DfE are not expecting schools to assist with Track and Trace after the 23rd December, for the rest of the holiday period.

There is a newsletter this week as usual and there will be one next week too – these continue to give you important information and is one of our main ways of communicating with you.

I do hope you all have a lovely and above all safe Christmas and New Year.

Kind regards

Homework in Year 2

Please read with your child every day. Many children are decoding their reading books well but find answering the comprehension questions much harder. We are working on this at school but it will really help if you can also ask questions during home question time. Please see our class page for further ideas (files section).

Maths: division sheet due Friday 8th Jan

English: reading comprehension due Friday 8th Jan

Spellings: common year 2 words to be quizzed on Friday 8th Jan.

As the holidays are approaching I have given the children an extra week to complete this work.

Merry Christmas to you all!
