11th January Looking back and forth in Year 4
Monday 14th January 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4
Looking back:
Welcome to the new spring term! The children worked well this week on their haikus in English. They really impressed me in our reading sessions, when we reviewed seasonal haikus written by different poets. The class worked hard deciphering unfamiliar words like ‘hesitant, celandine, buddleia, dew, bathes and despite. We also put these words into context. It was thrilling watching the children work out what these words meant using their general knowledge.
We had a great session with Mr Capewell for ‘Hi5’ on Wednesday, and then with Premier sports coaches on Friday working on gymnastics. Both sets of sports professionals praised the class on their listening, cooperation skills and general wonderful behaviour.
This week we started to get to grips with long division, using the chunking method.
We collected our findings from the experiments on the ‘rates of evaporation’ in Science. We discovered that surface area and temperature does affect the rates of evaporation (And we have the proof). We also began out new topic on Tudors. The class looked at strange artefacts from the Tudor era and had to guess what they thought they were – there were some very interesting ideas!
Year 4 – Pupils’ Highlights:
- Hi 5 with Mr Capewell
- Gymnastics with Premier Sports
- Writing winter haikus
- Reading winter haikus
- Chunking in maths
- Chips for lunch!
Family discussion questions:
- Can you complete this sentence? – the wider the surface area of the water the ________rate of evaporation.
- What is a haiku?
- What is a simile and metaphor?
- What is the difference between a simile and a metaphor?
- Can you tell me about one of the Tudor artefacts?
- How can you make it rain using hot water and ice cubes?
Looking forward:
Next week, we will be working a new unit on ‘Stories in a historical setting’, and we are going to use the Tudors topic to help us with this. The children will be looking at a couple of stories written as if in Tudor times and using them to stimulate their own stories.
This week, we will be hopefully completing our work on states of matter in Science. We will be looking at condensation and evaporation.
In history we will be looking at the Battle of Bosworth.
In maths, the children will be revisiting multiplication. We will be continuing the work on grid method, then working on the ladder method – which is like an expanded version of long multiplication. We will also be revising the chunking method in division too.
