Looking back:

Happy New Year to our Year 6 pupils and families.  What an exciting year lies ahead of us – lots of new challenges and changes for our pupils and we are confident that they will enjoy everything that lies ahead of them.  It’s been a great first week back.  Our pupils have got to grips with new topics, have engaged in their lessons and learnings with enthusiasm and it has been lovely to hear them chatting to us – and each other – about their Christmas and New Year holiday stories.

We have slight timetable changes this term.  Mrs. Cooper will be teaching in the afternoons on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs. Benson on a Thursday afternoon.  PE this term will – weather permitting – be on a Wednesday afternoon so we would expect pupils to have a full kit in school for them to participate in these lessons.  It was brilliant on Thursday to see the pupils in their various hats and we thank you – and them – for bringing these to the lesson. It was a great task and Mrs. Benson was thrilled to see such an array of designs and uses for their hats! There is a good selection of photos of the pupils wearing them – please see the “display” link on the Year 6 page for a good gallery.

You may have noticed that our pupils have begun their revision towards their SATs.  Our policy is to begin early and do short, sharp bursts rather than leaving it to the summer term and trying to cram.  They should be working on topics which have been taught in previous years and consolidating their learning.  The set pages are in their homework diaries – on labels – as well as the homework tab on the Y6 page.  We are in the midst of chatting about what revision means; how to revise; organising time throughout the week; and giving tips and hints to help them.  A date for a SATs meeting will be set and we shall notify you of this very soon.  In the meantime, do contact us if you have any queries.  Your support with this is very much appreciated.

So, overall, a brilliant start to 2019.  Keep it up, Year 6!

  • Seeing friends again after the Christmas break;
  • Getting to know Charles and Sophie;
  • Wearing my hat and looking at all the hats;
  • Playing lacrosse for the first time;
  • Watching Newsround.

Family discussion questions:

  • Grammar Focus:  What do “ACTIVE SENTENCES” focus on and can you give me an example?  In your example, which words are the “SUBJECT” , “VERB” and  “OBJECT”?

  • What did you think of lacrosse?
  • Which hat designer did you research and did you like their hats?
  • Who is Charles Maxim and what three facts can you tell me about him?

Looking forward:

  •  Next week, we shall be continuing with our writing based upon our new class novel “Rooftoppers” by Katherine Rundell, as well as learning about the nth term in maths.   The studies about evolution and inheritance, and hats, will also continue.  Please be aware that their CGP Revision books will be due for handing in – see below for specific information.
