Sunday 31st October – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back: This week, the children have begun a new unit of work in English.  This time, we are looking at the books ‘Goodnight stories for rebel girls’ also, ‘Boys who dare to be different’.  These thought-provoking books have already proved to be popular with the class.  We started to look at the story of Louis Braille as well as Alicia Alonso, Alfonsina Strada, Christian McPhilamy, Stephen Hawking and Lakshmi Bai.  In maths, we explored negative numbers and prepared to start are new unit on addition and subtraction.  In the afternoons, the children completed their pre topic work for their new science topic which is states of matter.  As well as looking at and discussing the book King and King for our No Outsiders work. 

Building On

  • Dictionary skills in English – looking up new words in our texts.
  • Counting and problem solving skills in maths with negative numbers.
  • Reading skills, when looking at the story of Ruby Bridges, as part of our Black History Month work.

TTRockstars Competition This Week – England Rocks – details on the newsletter

This week, we will be looking at how to write a biography as well as exploring fronted adverbials.  In maths we will begin our unit of work on addition and subtraction.  We will also look at Remembrance day poetry.  With Mrs Cooper, the class will be; creating rainfall graphs, computing using FMS logo,  working with the Premier coaches in gymnastics, exploring French and looking at the Christmas story in R.E.  All in all a busy week to come.

This term the children will have their PE session on a Tuesday afternoon.  

Homework in Year 4

Reading – daily at least 15 mins – remember to take the Accelerated Reader Quizzes

Rockstars – as much as possible 10 mins daily is ideal – at least once a week for 20 mins

Spellings  – Mrs Riddell – Please learn them for the test on Wednesday.  It is better to look at them for 5 minutes each day than try to learn them all in one night.  The children remember them better learnt over the week.

Maths– red sheet to be handed in on Thursday /Friday at the latest

English  - contractions sheet (red sheet) to be handed in on Thursday /Friday at the latest

Could the children please complete their homework in pencil or blue/black pen not felt tip.

Timestables – for Friday  All timestables  - x5 x9 x8 x15 – these will be muddled up this week.

(This can be handed it at anytime before Friday, the children know where the plastic wallets are)

 Letters

Some of the children had football letters from Mr Campion – the permission slips need to be back as soon as possible.

Nightly reading recorded in reading record – make sure it comes to school on Friday

Reading challenge has started – 20 reads in the reading record =10 housepoints
