Reception weekly update Week ending 3rd March 2023

Hello all

A great first week back after the half term break. The children are totallly engaged in the new topic Underground and keen to get stuck into their learning. This week we have learnt about animals that live underground. They each wrote a sentence about their chosen animal - they got ideas from looking through reference books. We discoverd a creature we had not heard of before called a mole cricket! They also learnt the names of some animal homes: badgers live in setts and foxes live in dens. Next week we are going to look at fossils and dinaosaurs. In maths we are perfecting our number formation and working on problem solving. We read the story called The Something. It is about a child finding a hole in the garden and wondering what might be in the hole. They all made predictions. The story does not actually tell us what is in the hole but gives lots of possible ideas and the illustrations are beautiful. Next week we are going to write a recount of the story. Some children took clipboards and pencils and went on a hole hunt in the playground and woods. They wrote a list of their ideas as what was in the holes. It is so lovely to see them using writing in play. In phonics we have now learnt all of the phase 3 sounds ( sh, th, ch, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er). We move onto phase 4 this coming week which is when we work on all the phase 3 sounds but also work on cvcc words (eg. went, from..) Please don't forget to keep getting their word pots out and doing a few minutes a day of going over them with your child. Thank you to all the grandparents who have replied so far for the tea party. We will start making their gifts this week so need to make sure we know exactly who is coming. I need to confirm with a few of you and will catch you this week.
