Week Ending 21st April 2017 - Year 3
Welcome back Year 3!
We have had a wonderful start to the term this week, getting used to being back in the flow of writing and reading lots. There was lots to catch up on from the Easter holidays! All the children (and teachers) are now getting used to having Mrs Morgan in the classroom (as Miss Aspey got married over the break!) and we have now seen lots of photos of the trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius to help with our Romans work.
We had our first swimming session with Mrs Cooper, too! It went really well and as far as we can all tell, all the children are ready to get back in the pool this week.
In our lessons we have started looking at writing newspapers in our literacy, addition and subtraction methods in maths, and the Roman legacy in our topic work! Here's what we will be looking at in the week to come:
English - In our reading we will be starting to write a book review, discussing the Roald Dahl books which we read last term. In our writing lessons, we are continuing to look at newspapers. We have been writing about the destruction of Pompeii, but will be moving on to look at another natural disaster later in the week. We will be looking at the Japan tsunami from 2009, as well as the impact it had on life there. As this is in living history, we will be exploring it carefully and with the understanding that it was a disaster which many people will remember happening. This will be helping us with our understanding of natural disasters, as well as newspapers. We will also look at the outcome of the tsunami - the protection now put in place to help prevent a similar event being so devastating in the future.
Maths - We are continuing to look at the addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers this week, focusing on partitioning and the different forms of column addition.
Science - We are continuing our rocks topic by looking at Mary Anning - a paeleontologist who discovered important fossils in Lyme Regis. Maybe we can find some fossils of our own as we continue this in the weeks to come?
Topic - We are bringing our Romans topic to a close with our last look at the legacy they left behind. We will be exploring Roman Numerals and some of their settlements in the UK.
P.E - We are continuing swimming all term, so please do not forget your swimming gear!
R.E - We will be starting our new R.E topic, exploring Judaism and the importance of the Synagogue to the faith.
Thank you again for a wonderful week back, as well as the kind messages and gifts in the lead up to the wedding.
Lets make this term amazing, Year 3!
