Y1 Friday 11th June 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

I hope you had a relaxing half term break in the sunshine. What a great first week in our last half-term together in Year 1!

In English we have begun to explore the purpose and features of letters using Hermelin the Detective Mouse as inspiration because he is an expert letter writer.

In Maths we have begun out place value topic looking at numbers 100- counting forwards and backwards in sequence and finding missing numbers.

In Science we have begun to look at learning for our holiday topic.

In PHSE we looked at the book ‘my world, your world’ considering the similarities and differences between the characters despite them living in different countries.

In History we looked at the structure and important of a landmark close to us ‘The Lovell Telescope’.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Finding numbers on a 100 square by thinking about the tens and ones of two-digit numbers.

√ Completing a 100 square by filling in missing numbers.

√ Working together to identify similarities and differences between book characters across the world.

√ Demonstrating our Art skills to make a special card.

√ Learning about what The Lovell Telescope does.

√ Using our knowledge of the book ‘Hermelin the Detective Mouse’ to be detectives ourselves to solve clues.

√ Ordering a deconstructed letter to understand the purpose and structure.

√ Identifying features of a letter.

√ Reading and sorting words with alternative ‘oo’ and ‘igh’ sounds.

√ Running races in PE.

√ Looking at pulse and rhythm in Music.

√ Handwriting practise of the letters ‘r, m and n’.

√ Beginning our RE unit on Islam and religious symbols.

Family discussion questions:

  • 45 has 5 tens and 4 ones. True or false? Why?
  • How does a letter begin and end? What could you put in a letter?
  • Where is the Lovell Telescope? Who invented it? What can it do?

Looking forward:

Next week we will plan and write a letter from the perspective of Hermelin.

In Maths we will partition, order and compare numbers to 100.

In Geography we will record our findings from our school grounds walk- identifying the human and physical features we saw before using this information to write a letter to our twin school to tell them about it.

In Science we will learn facts about summer and identify clothes we would wear in summer, in winter and if any we would wear in both, considering the material they are made from.

Reminders:

Individual and class photo Monday 14th June.

PE kits are only to be worn on Friday’s for this half term- normal school uniform every Tuesday please.

  • Spelling and handwriting homework was sent home Friday 11th June. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 18th
  • Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 18th June- this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
  • Reading is so vital as it underpins all aspects of learning. This is why reading every night is extremely important. Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
  • Please look at 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward).

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
