Y1 Friday 12th January 2024– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Christmas. We have had a lovely first week back.
In English we have used ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ to inspire our writing. We have explored vocabulary to understand their definitions and written sentences including adjectives.
In Maths we have begun to look at place value and partitioning numbers to 20 into tens and ones.
In Science we have thought about what we know about our bodies and in History, what we know about toys.
In Computing we have instructed a Beebot to move around a track based on directions we inputted and used the laptops to input instructions to make a sequence of music and used the touchpad to do so.
In PHSE we have thought about getting older and what we are looking forward to and then celebrated why our Grandad’s are amazing!
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Partitioning numbers to 20 and thinking about how many tens and ones they have.
√ Exploring vocabulary to identify what the meaning is.
√ Thinking about what being grateful is and how it makes us feel.
√ Learning to follow rules during games in PE.
√ Finding sounds in phoneme spotters and matching sounds in Phonics.
√ Thinking about what are we looking forward to doing as we get older.
√ Celebrating our amazing Grandads.
√ Understanding that Jesus had followers in RE.
√ Using our Ipads to log on and navigate the internet safely.
√ Using laptops and Beebots to help us learn how to program them with specific instructions to gain an outcome we want.
Family discussion questions:
- True or false? A square and a rectangle are the same.
- What are the ways you can find out information about the past?
- What does the ‘sneaky’ mean?
Looking forward:
Next week we will be using the text of ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’. to write a list poem (including adjectives), and writing past tense words by adding ‘ed’.
In Maths we will be exploring numbers within 20 and finding one more and one less than given numbers and using his knowledge to solve problems.
In Science we will be looking at the different parts of our bodies and how each part moves.
In History we will be thinking about questions we will ask our Grandparents about the toys they had a child.
- Please reply to our class letter with a letter about toys you had as a child (if this could be done by grandparents too that would be wonderful) and if you have a photo or can find one online, to show what your toy was like that would be helpful. If these could be in by Monday 22nd January, at the latest-Thank you.
Reminder
Harding Free Dress Day- Thursday 18th January.
Homework in Year 1
- Spelling and handwriting/ phonics homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.
- Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. This is now starting afresh for this half term.
