Y1 Friday 14th May 2021– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
We have had a great week in Year 1!
In English we have planned and begun to write our detective story.

In Science we looked at food that comes from plants.
In Geography we have constructed / drawn an aerial map of our school grounds.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Planning our detective story.
√ Writing the opening and build up of our own detective story.
√ Working together in pairs to make equal groups of given amounts.
√ Using arrays to make doubles.
√ Using an aerial map to find features of our school grounds and using this to draw / construct an aerial map of our infant site.
√ Reading and writing split digraphs to secure our understanding.
√ Practising handwriting the letter ‘b’.
√ Enjoying listening to Smelly Bill’s smelliest stories.
√ Running races in PE.
√ Learning all about Eid in RE/ PHSE.
√ Identifying low and high notes in Music.
√ Learning about Judaism in RE.
√ Identifying parts of plants that we can eat.
Family discussion questions:
- What is double 7?
- Who is the detective character in your story? Can you recall what happens?
- What human and physical features can you see in our school grounds??
Looking forward:
Next week in English we are writing the problem and resolution of our detective story.
In Maths we will begin our division topic looking at sharing.
In Science we will be identifying and naming common garden plants.
In History we will be learning about Sir Bernard Lovell and the Lovell Telescope.
Reminders:
- Spelling and handwriting homework was sent home Friday 14th May. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3,5 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 21st May.
- Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 21st May- this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
- Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
- Please look at 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward).
If you have any questions please ask.
Thanks again for your continued support.
Kind regards and take care
Ms Cummins
