Y1 Friday 15th November 2024– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
We have had a busy and productive week this week in Year 1!
In Maths we have begun to look fact families and how to record them systematically to check we have found them all- we have used part whole models and tens frames with counters and recorded formal number sentences.
In English we have analysed the story of ‘Rapunzel’, looked at features we could use in our writing and begun to plan our story.
In Geography we have identified what a; town, village, city and coastline are like and begun to look at human and physical features we would find there.
In Science we have been looking at trees in autumn and comparing them to what they are like in winter.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Identifying features within the story of Rapunzel.
√ Writing time openers to make our story more interesting.
√ Planning our story using pictures from the story map.
√ Using part whole models to help us when adding.
√ Thinking different ways to make pairs up to 10.
√ Looking at photos of towns, villages, cities and coastlines to identify their features.
√ Learning what ‘human’ and ‘physical’ features are.
√ Identifying the differences between trees in autumn to winter.
√ Beginning to look at the Christmas Story in RE.
√ Moving our bodies carefully and safely in PE when catching balls.
√ Singing along to songs and making sounds with our bodies in time with the music.
√ Understanding why we wear a poppy on Remembrance Day.
√ Repeating days of the week in French.
Family discussion questions:
- What is a human feature? What is a physical feature? Can you spot any this weekend?
- What are the numbers bonds to 7? Start with 7+0 = 7. Should they go in an order?
- What time openers could you use in your story? EG- On Monday, later that day.
Looking forward:
Next week we will begin writing our story of ‘Rapunzel’.
In Maths we will begin to look at number bonds to 10.
In Geography we will continue to look at the human and physical features of a town, village, city and coastline.
Reminders:
Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday (from this week) and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 spellings home. The class will be tested informally (we call it a quiz) on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about- it gives the children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.
Book change on Thursday.
Please continue to read every night and practise the sound cards. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. I am so impressed with how many children have achieved the Reading Challenge so far.
