Y1 Friday 17th January 2025– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English we have explored the text of ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’. We have used the theme of this book to inspire us to write a list poem (including adjectives), adding ‘ed’ endings to verbs to write in the past tense and identify different features of the text.

In Maths, we have explored numbers within 20 and found one more and one less than given numbers.

In Science we learnt about what Polar animals eat and identified them as Carnivores, Herbivores or Omnivores.

In History we have thought about questions we will ask our Grandparents about the toys they had a child. We have also played with our favourite toys and labelled their features.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Including adjectives in our list poem to make our writing more interesting.

√ Adding ‘ed’ to verbs to write in the past tense.

√ Exploring the tens and ones in numbers up to 20.

√ Finding one more and one less in Maths.

√ Labelling features of our favourite toys.

√ Generating questions to find out information about toys from the past.

√ Squatting using equipment in Gymnastics in PE.

√ Finding sounds in phoneme spotters and matching sounds in Phonics.

√ Reading information about what Polar animals eat and sorting them into groups based on this.

√ Looking at what features our favourite toys have and labelling them.

√ Learning about why people followed Jesus in RE.

√ Moving based on the pitch of the music in Music.

Family discussion questions:

  • How to you write ‘jump’ as a past tense word? Can you put it into a sentence?
  • What number is 1 more than 12? How many tens and ones are in this number?
  • What does a Carnivore eat? What is the name of the groups of animals that eat other animals (meat) and plants?

Looking forward:

Next week In English we will be planning and writing our own finding story.

In Maths we will be using a number line to find and estimate up to 20.

In Science we will be understanding the characteristics that Emperor Penguins have to help them to survive in Antarctica.

In History we will be thinking about similarities and differences between old and new toys- using a porcelain and plastic doll and a wind- up tin car and remote control for comparison.

Homework in Year 1

  • Spelling and handwriting/ phonics homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 5 spellings home. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.

Reminders

  • Please reply to our class letter with a letter about toys you had as a child (if this could be done by grandparents too that would be wonderful) and if you have a photo or can find one online, to show what your toy was like that would be helpful. If these could be in by Monday 27th January, at the latest-Thank you.

Thanks for your support
