Y1 Friday 17th November 2023– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
We have had a great week in Year 1!
In Maths we have used tens frames and part whole models to secure our learning of number bonds to 10 and answered problem solving and reasoning questions related to this.
In English we have written the story of Rapunzel. The children worked incredibly hard to learn the actions and words and this has really helped their writing.
In Geography we have identified the human and physical features of a coastline and city.
In Science we have observed the weather across the week.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Using lots of practical equipment to find pairs to 10.
√ Learning to find number bonds to 10 in lots of different ways.
√ Identifying human and physical features of a coastline and a city.
√ Practising songs for our Christmas performance.
√ Writing the story of Rapunzel.
√ Saying numbers to 20 in French.
√ Writing a weather diary showing what we have observed this week.
√ Trying our best with our handwriting.
√ Jumping onto a springboard and off a box safely during gymnastics in PE.
√ Doing brilliantly in our spelling quiz.
√ Learning about how Jesus was born in RE.
Family discussion questions:
- What will you see in a city that you would not see in a village?
- Thinking about number bonds to 10. What pairs with 2? With 7? With 0?
- What has the weather been like this week? How is it different to summer?
Looking forward:
Next week we will begin to explore instructions, this will be linked to Rapunzel.
In Maths we will continue to look at concepts related to addition and begin to look at subtraction.
In Geography we will look at human and physical features found in a village and town before moving onto to naming and identifying the 4 countries of the UK.
In Science materials to see which makes the best sounds.
Reminders:
Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. There may be some repeated words if these have not been applied to our writing in class. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.
Book change on Thursday.
Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge.
Nativity
Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th December 9:30am in the Village Hall.
