Y1 Friday 17th September 2021– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
What a wonderful week we have had in Year 1.
In Maths we have been sorting and counting objects.
In English we have look at the book ‘Not a stick’. We have made guesses about what the stick is because it is ‘not a stick’. We collected sticks and designed objects based on our chosen sticks and labelled them before labelling pictures from the story and writing captions., made them and matched labels to pictures from the story.
We have begun to think about our History and Geography topic for our annual exhibition- this is based on Antarctica- looking at Captain Scott’s expedition, the conditions of Antarctica and much more!
We used our initial learning about Antarctica to help us to think about what we would need in our backpack if we were to explore Antarctica. Here are just a few of the great ideas we had- a camping stove and sausages in case we were hungry, a book to stop us feeling bored and a furry friend so we didn’t feel lonely.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Using our ‘chopping arms’ to help us to segment words when writing and reading them.
√ Sorting objects based on their colour, size or shape both practically and recorded.
√ Counting objects methodically to help accuracy.
√ Designing our ‘not a stick’ objects based on the book.
√ Writing a list about what the stick could be.
√ Writing labels and captions using pictures from ‘Not a stick’ book.
√ Games, balance and movement skills in PE
√ Zumba with Ms Cummins.
√ Thinking about what we know and what we want to find out about polar animals, Captain Scott and Antarctica.
√ Thinking about what we would take in our backpack to Antarctica.
√ Generating questions to help us gain answers about Captain Scott.
√ Finding space and moving in lots of different ways in PE.
√ Using parts of our body to make sounds in Music.
Family discussion questions:
- Can you write a caption about an object from ‘Not a Stick’?
- What number comes in the middle of this sequence? 4, __, ___, 7 ,8, 9 ___
- Find some of your things at home- how could you sort them? Size, colour or shape? Can you think of anymore?
Looking forward:
Next week we will continue writing labels, lists and captions; using ‘Dangerous’ book to stimulate our writing.
In Maths we will continue to count objects before moving onto representing objects and numbers in practical ways before formal recording.
We will sort animals into groups based on if they are carnivores, omnivores and herbivores in Science and use this to decide how to sort polar animals into groups based on what they eat.
In Geography we will look at the continents and locate the equator, North Pole and South Pole.
Reminder- Reading books to be sent into school each Thursday for book change. Reading every night can be as much as your child can manage and not just books from school- anything they are interested in.
Thanks for your support
