Y1 Friday 1st December 2023– Looking Back & Forth
Y1 Friday 1st December 2023– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
We have had a great week in Year 1!
In Maths we have learnt how to cross out when taking away and used a number line to count backwards
In Science, we explored the different parts of plants through dissecting vegetables and looked at how the weather has changed from autumn to winter and what clothes we wear as it gets colder.
We have used atlases in Geography to help us name and locate the countries of the UK.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Practising our handwriting.
√ Showing how well we have learnt our spellings in our spelling test.
√ Looking at the different parts of vegetables.
√ Crossing out to count backwards and seeing what is left.
√ Counting backwards on a number line.
√ Discussing how trees have changed from autumn to winter and how the weather is changing.
√ Practising for our Christmas performance.
√ Catching and throwing balls accurately in PE.
√ Using atlases to help us name and make a Playdoh map of the UK.
Family discussion questions:
- Can you instruct someone how to get dressed?
- What question could you ask a witch?
- How have the trees changed since autumn? Has the weather changed?
Looking forward:
Next week we will plan and write instructions for how to trap a witch.
We will be continuing our Nativity rehearsals.
In DT we will explore moving pictures and begin our quilling project.
In PHSE we will be looking at the story of ‘Ten Little Pirates’.

Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 spellings home and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. There may be some repeated words if these have not been applied to our writing in class. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.
Book change on Thursday.
Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge.
If you have any questions please ask
Thank you for your continued support
