Y1 Friday 20th January 2023– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English we have explored the text of ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’. We have used the theme of this book to inspire us to write a list poem (including adjectives), adding ‘ed’ endings to verbs to write in the past tense and identify different features of the text.

In Maths, we have explored numbers within 20 and found one more and one less than given numbers and used this knowledge to solve problems

In Science, we have thought about parts of our body and how we use them.

In History we have explored toys from the past and learnt about what toys were like in Victorian times.

In computing we have made a human pictogram and learnt, as a class, how to make a pictogram using the Purple Mash programme.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Including adjectives in our list poem to make our writing more interesting.

√ Adding ‘ed’ to verbs to write in the past tense.

√ Exploring the tens and ones in numbers up to 20.

√  Finding one more and one less in Maths.

√ Using our knowledge of tens and ones to help us to solve more than and less than problems.

√ Moving parts of our body in different ways in Science.

√ Looking at toys from the past and exploring how they work.

√ Learning about china dolls, skipping ropes and china tea sets that were played with by ‘rich’ Victorian children.

√ Finding space, balancing and controlling your body in PE.

√ Learning about the followers of Jesus in RE.

√ Moving based on the pitch of the music in Music.

√ Competing a tally chart to help us to find out information to make a human pictogram.

Family discussion questions:

  • How to you write ‘jump’ as a past tense word? Can you put it into a sentence?
  • What number is 1 more than 12? How many tens and ones are in this number?
  • What were Victorian toys like? Were the toys different for poor and rich children?

Looking forward:

Next week we will be writing our own finding story. In Maths we will be using a number line, estimating numbers on a blank number line and comparing objects using the language of greater than, less than and equal to.

In Science we will be completing tally charts and using these to inform the pictograms we will be generating on the laptops.

In History we will compare toys from the past to now, thinking about similarities and differences.

Homework in Year 1

  • Spelling and handwriting/ phonics homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. Homework due Friday 27.1.23.

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.

Reminders

  • Thank you to those of you that have replied to us- they are brilliant. If you have not already, please reply to our class letter with a letter about toys you had as a child (if this could be done by grandparents too that would be wonderful) and if you have a photo or can find one online, to show what your toy was like that would be helpful. These will be stuck into your child’s History book and read out across the weeks to the class. Thank you.
