Y1 Friday 21st May 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a lovely week in Year 1!

In English we have finished writing our fantastic detective stories and published them in our neatest handwriting.

In Maths we have begun to look at division through sharing to make equal groups before looking at fractions of shapes and amounts.

In Science we have studied common garden plants and used this to help us to name and identify them and dissected flowers to look at their different parts.

In Geography we have identified the human and physical features in our school grounds.

In DT we have designed our sandwiches including ingredients from the parts of plants we eat.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Writing the problem and resolution of our own detective story.

√ Publishing our stories in our best handwriting.

√ Working together in pairs to name and identify garden flowers.

√ Sharing by making equal amounts.

√ Identifying human and physical features within our school grounds.

√ Reading and sorting words with alternative ‘igh’ and ‘ear’ sounds.

√ Relay races in PE.

√ Learning facts about Sir Bernard Lovell’s life.

√ Designing sandwiches including ingredients that come from parts of a plant.

√ Continuing to learn about Judaism in RE.

√ Looking at prayer mats and beads, traditional dress and eating food as part of our class Eid celebrations.

√ Dissecting flowers to identify their different parts.

Family discussion questions:

  • Can 25 be shared equally into 2 groups? How do you know?
  • What common garden plants can you spot in your garden?
  • What adjectives could you use to describe jewels?

Looking forward:

Next week in Maths we will continue to look at fractions of shapes and amounts.

In Science we will be identifying trees in our school grounds using their leaf shapes to help us.

In History we will be learning about the Lovell Telescope.

In DT we will be using our cutting, peeling and grating skills when making our sandwiches.

Reminders:

  • Spelling and handwriting homework was sent home Friday 21st May. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 28th May.
  • Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 28th May- this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
  • Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
  • Please look at 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward).

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
