Y1 Friday 22nd September 2023– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
Wow what a great week we have had- lots more independence and super work!
In Maths we have counted objects and moved onto larger groups whilst thinking about ’the why’ when answering problems.
In English we have used the book ‘Dangerous’ as inspiration for our writing. We have identified appropriate labels for given pictures and begun to think carefully about adjectives we could use to make our simple captions more exciting.
As part of Science and Geography we have learnt about each season and completed a season wheel.
In Science we have sorted animals into groups based on their features.
We are very close to earning our first marble jar treat!
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Counting objects in different sizes groups.
√ Writing and identifying adjectives.
√ Identifying animals and sorting them into groups (mammals, insects and birds) based on their features.
√ Continuing to revisit Phase 3 sounds and using ‘dots and dashes’ to identify sounds (dots for a single letter and dashes for 2 letters that make one sound).
√ Learning about the seasons.
√ Creating collages using materials of different textures.
√ Helping to create beautiful willow art for the exhibition.
√ Controlling and passing the ball in PE.
√ Saying how we are feeling and colours in French.
√ Labelling the features of a church in RE.
√ Singing in high and low pitch in Music.
Family discussion questions:
- What is the purpose of a label?
- What order should these numbers be in? Why? 11, 9, 2, 15
- Which season is the coldest? Warmest?
Looking forward:
Next week we will continue to use the book ‘Dangerous’ as inspiration to write adjectives and captions about our friends.
In Maths we will be representing numbers in different ways and writing numbers as words.
In Geography and Science we will be exploring the weather and clothing we wear in each season.
In Science we will be learning about what animals eat and sorting them into groups based on this (Omnivores, Herbivores and Carnivores)
Reminders:
Thank you for all of the recycling- we have enough now ?
Reading books should be brought into school each Thursday so they can be changed overnight. They will be given back each Friday.
Please continue to read every night as this underpins so much learning in Year 1. For every consecutive 14 days of reading the children will receive 10 house points and see their face on the ‘Reading Challenge Wall of Fame’- If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track their progress (They will automatically get a read for Thursday night when I keep the books).
From the Newsletter
We are asking for a photo of your child to be sent in with a butterfly—this can be a real one, one that has been made, a photograph or image etc. These photos will then be put around the entrance to the exhibition. If you are happy to do this please bring the photo in by Friday 29th September.
Thursday 28th September is Butterfly Day in school. Children are asked to come dressed as butterflies or in butterfly colours. This may be just one colour that can be seen on a particular butterfly eg if they want to wear orange it may be because the colour symbolises the Monarch Butterfly or blue as it is found on the Peacock Butterfly. Your child may want to wear butterfly wings or a butterfly top. There are lots of options, we just want to fill the school with butterfly colours. We are asking for a voluntary donation of £2 from each child who does this, towards the memorial for Mrs Freeman. We would not expect a further £2 from families who have already sent in a donation. Let’s fill the school with butterfly colours on Thursday 28th. Thank you
If you have any questions, please ask.
Thank you for your continued support.
