Y1 Friday 25th June 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

Another great week in Year 1!

In English we have begun to explore ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ to inspire our writing.

In Maths we have condensed our learning of place value and begun our money unit by identifying coins and notes.

In Science we have sorted sea shore animals into groups- invertebrates, mammals, fish and birds.

In Art we have rolled, stamped, rubbed and pressed to create African inspired prints.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Finding one more and one less than a given numbers.

√ Identifying the look of coins and their value.

√ Matching coins to their value and ordering them.

√ Exploring the meaning of words and phrases as part of group.

√ Using a picture to inspire and generate adjectives to describe nouns.

√ Naming sea shore animals and sorting them into animal groups based on their features.

√ Exploring African inspired prints.

√ Using stamps, rollers and potatoes to make African print designs.

√ Team skills in PE.

√ Designing a prayer mat in RE.

√ Finding and reading real and fake words.

Family discussion questions:

  • What coins are worth more than 2p but less than 50p?
  • Why is a jellyfish not a fish? Does a mammal lay eggs or give birth to babies?
  • What things could you describe as ‘wild’?

Looking forward:

Next week we will begin using analysing text based on ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, retrieving answers from the shared text and sequencing the story.

In Maths we will find continue to look at money by adding and making amounts.

In Geography we will be going on a village walk to identify human and physical features of our locality before making a journey line based on where we walked and what we saw.

In Science we will be describing the features of different sea shore animals.

Reminders:

Village Walk Monday 28th June am- suitable footwear and rain jacket please.

PE kits are only to be worn on Friday’s for this half term- normal school uniform every Tuesday please.

  • Spelling homework was sent home Friday 25th June. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2. I have sent reading /phonics worksheet as an alternative to handwriting this week- thinking carefully about segmenting and blending as well as identifying sounds. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 2nd
  • Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 2nd July - this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
  • Reading is so vital as it underpins all aspects of learning. This is why reading every night is extremely important. Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
  • Please look at 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward).

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
