Y1 Friday 27th November 2020– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a great week in Year 1!

In Maths we have used looked at addition counting on to find more and using number bonds and part whole models to help us.

In English we have begun to learn about instructions including why the order is important and what imperative verbs are after Rapunzel sent us a mystery box of objects and a letter.

In Geography we have identified the human and physical features of a village. We have named and identified the countries of the UK using an atlas to help us to make a map of the UK out of Play Doh.

In Science, we predicted which material would be best used for a musical instrument and tested this out before playing instruments to see what sounds they made.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Rapunzel sending us a message about her trapping the witch.

√ Learning ‘ie’ sound and recapping tricky phase 3 sounds.

√ Testing which materials make the best musical instruments.

√ Using number bonds to help us add.

√ Identifying the 4 countries of the UK on a map and making them with playdoh and labelling with flags.

√ Practising our Christmas songs.

√ Bouncing balls accurately so our partner can catch them.

√ Learning the days of the week in French.

Family discussion questions:

  • What are the countries of the UK?
  • If I count on from 8 to 12 will I say 7? Why?
  • Which material do you think made the best sound during our Science lesson? Why?

Looking forward:

Next week we will continue to explore instructions.

In Maths we will begin to look at concepts related to subtraction.

In Science we will look at the different parts that make up vegetables: seeds, leaves, flowers and stems. We will dissect vegetables to help us to sort them based on the properties they have.

Reminders:

Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.

Book change on Thursday.

Please continue to read every night and practise the sound cards. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Thursday’s after checking Reading Diaries.

We are learning a song for our whole school Christmas CD- ‘Jingle Bell Rock by Brenda Lee’- if you would like to listen to it and sing at home the link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s3UnOPfbjA
