Y1 Friday 28th May 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

What a great half term in Year 1!

We have consolidated our learning across all subjects this week.

In Maths we have looked at finding a quarter of shapes and amounts.

In Science we have identified trees by their leaves and spotted invertebrates in our school grounds.

In DT we made sandwiches including ingredients from the parts of plants we eat. We peeled, cut and grated our ingredients to make our sandwich creations.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Find a quarter of shapes by halving and halving again to make equal parts.

√ Working together in pairs to spot leaves and name trees in our school grounds.

√ Sharing amounts into 4 parts to find quarters of amounts.

√ Identifying invertebrates in our school grounds and presenting our findings in a poster.

√ Reading and sorting words with alternative ‘ai’ sounds.

√ Relay races in PE.

√ Looking at high and low pitch in Music.

√ Cutting, peeling and grating sandwich ingredients that come from parts of a plant, before constructing them.

√ Evaluating our sandwich creations.

√ Handwriting practise of the letter ‘k’.

√ Continuing to learn about Judaism in RE.

√ Weeding the raised beds to see parts of plants includin roots directly frm the soil.

√ Consolidating our science learning through a quiz.

Family discussion questions:

  • Can 26 be shared equally into quarters? How do you know?
  • What characteristics does an insect have?
  • Can you identify any trees in your garden or on your walk?

Looking forward:

After half term in English we will be writing letters linked to our Geography topic before using ‘Where the wild things are’ to inspire our writing.

In Maths we will look at place value to 100.

In Geography we will be comparing our school grounds to our twin schools, Elizabethfontein, in South Africa.

As part of Art and DT we will be printing to create African outfit designs.

Reminders:

PE kits are only to be worn on Friday’s for this half term- normal school uniform every Tuesday please.

  • Spelling and handwriting homework was sent home Friday 28th May. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 11th June
  • Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 11th June- this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
  • Reading is so vital as it underpins all aspects of learning. This is why reading every night is extremely important. Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
  • Please look at 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward).

If you have any questions please ask.

Have a lovely half term holiday!

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
