Y1 Friday 29th November 2024– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a great week in Year 1!

In Maths we have used looked at addition by counting on to find more and using number bonds and part whole models to help us.

In English we have continued to write the story of Rapunzel.

In Geography we have identified the human and physical features of a village and town.

In Science, we predicted which material would be best used for a musical instrument and tested this out before playing instruments to see what sounds they made.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Writing a retell of the story of Rapunzel.

√ Testing which materials make the best musical instruments.

√ Using number bonds to help us add.

√ Finding fact families to 8 by using part whole models and counters.

√ Playing percussion instruments made out of different materials and identifying the sounds they make.

√ Practising our Christmas songs.

√ Running and throwing and running and catching safely when playing rugby in PE.

√ Learning about the shepherd’s journey to Bethlehem in RE.

Family discussion questions:

  • What material made the best sound? Why?
  • If I count on from 8 to 12 will I say 7? Why?
  • Which material do you think made the best sound during our Science lesson? Why?

Looking forward:

Next week we will continue to write our story of Rapunzel before beginning to look at instructions and why their order is important.

In Geography we will begin to identify the countries of the UK using an atlas to help us.

We will be rehearsing for our Nativity performance.

In Science we will look at the different parts that make up vegetables: seeds, leaves, flowers and stems. We will dissect vegetables to help us to sort them based on the properties they have. We will also look at what it is like in autumn.

Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. There may be some repeated words if these have not been applied to our writing in class. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.

Book change on Thursday.

Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge.

If you have any questions please ask
