Y1 Friday 2nd July 2021– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
Another busy but fun week in Year 1!
We began our week by exploring our lovely village to identify human and physical features.
In English we have read our model text as a class, answering retrieval and inference questions. We have looked at alliteration and similes which is linked to parts of the text we are using to influence our writing.
In Maths we counted coins and made amounts.
In Science we described features of seashore animals.
In Geography we compared our school to Elizabethfontein school and made a journey line based on our village walk.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Counting coins.
√ Making different amounts with coins.
√ Exploring our village during our walk.
√ Writing similes using ‘As ___ as a_____’ to help us.
√ Writing adjectives and nouns with the same initial sounds (alliteration).
√ Looking at photos from Elizabethfontein to help us compare our school grounds.
√ Describing the features of seashore animals.
√ Making a journey line based on the human and physical features we saw on our village walk.
√ Sports day races in PE.
√ Finding Mecca on a map and looking at mosques in RE.
√ Saying breakfast words in French.
√ Identifying and reading real and fake words.
√ Beginning our weaving project.
Family discussion questions:
- What coins can you use to make 50p? 75p? 83p?
- What does Elizabethfontein have at their school that we do not have? What do we have they Elizabethfontein do not have?
- Think of more adjectives to describe a frog- remember to use the same initial sound like we learnt in class (alliteration) EG- Fabulous frog
Looking forward:
Next week we will begin analysing and sequencing a text based on ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, before planning our own story.
In Maths we will look at time.
In Art and DT we will learn to weave.
In Science we will be sorting objects based on whether they can be recycled or not.
Reminders:
PJ fun run Monday – wear pjs and bring £2.
PE kits are only to be worn on Friday’s for this half term- normal school uniform every Tuesday please. This Friday for Sports Day.
- Spelling homework and handwriting was sent home Friday 2nd July. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 9th
- Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 9th July - this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
- Reading is so vital as it underpins all aspects of learning. This is why reading every night is extremely important. Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
- Please look at 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward).
If you have any questions please ask.
Thanks again for your continued support.
Kind regards and take care
Ms Cummins
