Y1 Friday 30th September 2022– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

Another fantastic week in Year 1- great effort to complete independent work and attitude to learning!

In Maths we have counted objects and represented them in a tens frame. We have recognised numbers as words and matched them to amounts and numbers.

In English we have used adjectives to describe our friends and put these ideas into sentences including capital letters and full stops.

In Art we have layered coloured materials to create textured collages for exhibition.

In Science we have sorted animals into groups based on what they eat- omnivores, herbivores and carnivores.

In Geography we have used the atlas to identify and name continents on a map of the world

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Continuing to use our chopping arms to read and write words using phoneme from Phase 3.

√ Writing about our friends using capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and adjectives in our sentences.

√ Using different materials to create collages for our exhibition.

√ Sorting animals into groups based on what they eat.

√ Counting objects and representing them in tens frames.

√ Recognising numbers as words and matching them to amounts.

√ Looking an atlas to name and locate continents of the world.

√ Moving and finding space in PE.

√ Continuing to repeat and saying greetings, count to 10 and colours in French.

√ Recognising and naming features of church in RE.

Family discussion questions:

  • What adjectives would you use to describe your best friend?
  • What are the 7 continents of the world?
  • What is an omnivore, carnivore and herbivore?

Looking forward:

Next week we will begin to learn a ‘story map’- putting actions to the words and following the pictures to help us remember facts for our non-chronological report about David Attenborough.

In Maths we will be counting on from any number and finding one more before beginning to count backwards.

In Geography we will be looking at the conditions of the Sahara Desert and Antarctica when looking at hot and cold places. In Science we will be using this information to help us to understand what characteristics animals have to survive in these habitats.

In Art we will be painting- mixing colours and using different sized brushes for different purposes and using pastels to creature lines and textures.

Reminders:

Book change on Thursday- please ensure books are in school so these can be changed overnight.

Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge.

Just to clarify- Reading challenges are counted up every Thursday during book change and then awarded on Friday (backdated if awarded before that). We celebrate this achievement as a class all together.

Thank you for your continued support

Ms Cummins
