Y1 Friday 31st January 2025– Looking Back & Forth

Y1 Friday 31st January 2025– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English we have finished our finding stories and began to explore recount messages and vocabulary, using ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ story as inspiration.

In Maths we compared and ordered numbers then consolidated our learning through a Place Value Quiz.

In History we have identified old and new toys and sorted them and we have ordered toys on a timeline comparing toys to our grandparents, parents and ours. We are really enjoying reading the family letters that have been sent in related to toys from the past.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Putting dance moves to a story in PE.

√ Comparing number using the language and symbols of greater than, less than and equal to.

√ Ordering two-digit numbers using our knowledge of the value of the tens and ones in those numbers.

√ Working hard to read and write words with adjacent constants.

√ Finishing our finding story.

√ Discussing vocabulary.

√ Exploring old toys.

√ Reading a letter from Major Glad and writing a class letter back to him with very interesting questions.

√ Ordering toys on a timeline based on who would have played with them- grandparents, parents or us.

√ Exploring pitch in Music.

√ Visiting the Book Fair.

Family discussion questions:

  • What does the word ‘unusual’ mean? Can you put it into a sentence?
  • Which looks ‘right’… fright or frIt? Keep or kyp?
  • Order these numbers greatest to smallest then smallest to biggest. How do you know? 12, 18, 8       --- 16, 6, 11,       --- 20 , 2, 12

Looking forward:

Next week we will begin a explore and write short recount messages unit of writing, this will be inspired by our book of the half term ‘Major Glad Major Dizzy’.

In Maths we will begin our addition and subtraction  unit.

In History we will decide which toys we would have like to have played with and why and whether they are different from our favourite toys.

Homework in Year 1

  • Spelling and handwriting/ phonics homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning.

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.

Reminders

  • Book Fair- The children have looked at the books in the Book Fair yesterday and written a ‘wish list’- the children have brought their wish lists home. The Book Fair is until next Wednesday for your orders. Thank you!
