Y1 Friday 31st March 2023– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

What a great end to the spring term we have had in school! I am so impressed with how well the children have worked.

This week we have consolidated our learning of place value to 50by completing a quiz before looking at length and height.

We have shown our reading skills and all of our knowledge about punctuation and grammar.

In Art and DT, we have continued to work on our bird houses and evaluated them by saying what we liked about them and what we would change next time. We have also finished our Kandinsky inspired seasons trees

We have published our non-chronological report about birds for display.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Accessing the internet safely on the tablets.

√ Identifying and sorting words with split digraphs and alternative pronunciations.

√ Writing up our bird non-chronological reports for display.

√ Using the percussion instruments and listening to classical music in Music.

√ Learning about the resurrection in RE.

√ Creating our bird houses.

√ Saying what we like and what we would change about our bird houses.

√ Dancing in PE.

√ Learning to repeat and say names of fruit and birds in French.

√ Exploring length and height.

√ Playing split digraph bingo.

Family discussion questions:

  • What did you like about your bird house design? What would you change?
  • How many tens and ones are there in… 38? 45? 50?
  • Who was your favourite character in the story of ‘Hermelin’ and why?

Looking forward:

After the Easter break we will be writing letters using ‘Hermelin’ as inspiration before moving onto exploring the book ‘Where the wild things are’- this will inspire us to write a portal narrative.

In Maths we will be look at mass volume before beginning to learning about multiplication and division.

In Geography we will be learning about the human and physical features in our school grounds and our local area of Goostrey and using this exploration to study trees and plants, in Science, too.

…and much more!

Reminders:

  • I have put together a Phonics activity booklet- games, phoneme spotters, reading of real and fake words. I thought this would be something fun for the children to enjoy and to reinforce their Phonics learning over the two week break. I have not set any spellings to learn this week.

  • I have been so impressed with the progress in reading so far this year and the enthusiasm for the Reading Challenge- it really does help. Our 14 day Reading Challenge will start a fresh after the holidays, so please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual so books to be brought in on Thursday 20th April.

  • PE next half term is Friday- please wear PE kits on this day.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
