Y1 Friday 4th February 2022– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
In English we have written our finding stories and explore poetry about toys- reading aloud and performing them for our classmates.
In Maths we have begun our addition and subtraction unit. We have looked at adding numbers together by counting on, on a number line and partitioning 2-digit numbers by considering the tens and ones in these numbers.
In Science we have continued to explore our senses including choosing our favourite flavour crisps and guessing some of the weird and wonderful things we have smelt.
In History we have looked at toys from the past and compared them to toys we have now.
We have learnt about the rituals of Chinese New Year and explored some Chinese musical instruments.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Listening to each other when working as a team and following the rules of games in PE.
√ Using a number line to count on.
√ Partitioning 2-digit numbers to help when adding them to one-digit numbers.
√ Working hard to read and write words including the i_e split digraph.
√ Finishing our finding story.
√ Putting our sense of smell and taste to the test.
√ Reading and performing poetry about toys.
√ Comparing toys from the past to toys we have now, thinking about similarities and differences.
√ Exploring Chinese toys as part of our learning about Chinese New Year.
√ Listening to songs to identify high and low pitch in Music.
√ Reading stories from the Bible in RE.
Family discussion questions:
- Can you remember some of the poetry you performed? Can you perform it like a poet would?
- What does a split digraph mean?
- How do you add 11 and 4 together? What is the answer?
Looking forward:
Next week we will begin a short recount messages unit of writing, this will be inspired by our book of the half term ‘Major Glad Major Dizzy’.
In Maths we will continue with our addition and subtraction unit- looking at number bonds.
In History we will be ordering toys on a timeline based on who would have played with them- us, our parents or grandparents. We will also be reading our letters from home and decide which toys we would have like to have played with and why and whether they are different from our favourite toys.
In PHSE we will be discussing the different feelings we have and positive ways to help us manage them.
Homework in Year 1
- Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This really helps to reinforce the sounds we have been working on in class and enables the children to use the sounds / words in their writing. Homework due Friday 11.2.22.
- Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.
Reminders
- Virtual Book Fair- The children have looked at the books in the Book Fair today and written a ‘wish list’- the children have brought theirs home today. If you wish to purchase any books, please follow the information on the form. Thank you!
