Y1 Friday 5th November 2021– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
What a great first week back for our autumn 2 term- great enthusiasm and attitude to learning!
In Maths we have begun to look at part whole models to help us begin to see how amounts can be split. We have used lots of practical equipment to help us with this.
In English we have been inspired by the book ‘Rapunzel’ by Bethan Woollvin. We have explored the book through Shared Reading and begun to learn the story through the use of a story map and following it with actions. We had an interesting debate related to our Traditional Tales unit of writing. We discussed ‘good’ and ‘bad’ characters and we were torn as class as to which side Jack from ‘Jack in the Beanstalk’ should be in. Lots of the children decided he was a ‘good’ character and a few thought he was not so good- everyone could justify their opinion.
We began our Geography topic by thinking about a place we have recently visited and what we could see there.
In PHSE we thought about the different feelings we experience, what might be the cause of them and who we could share our feelings with.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Retelling some Traditional Tales to our carpet partners.
√ Learning the story of Rapunzel through actions following Ms Cummins’ story map.
√ Learning how to use a part whole model to partition numbers.
√ Using our inference skills to answer questions based on a picture from our Rapunzel book.
√ Reading and spelling CCVC words.
√ Learning to do cursive handwriting of the letter ‘i’.
√ Exploring words and their meaning- explaining our thoughts before working together to match them to their meaning.
√ Thinking about where we have visited and what we have seen.
√ Describing characters from Rapunzel using wonderful adjectives.
√ Doing whole class shared reading to explore the text of Rapunzel.
√ Making facial expression to match our feelings with our carpet partners.
√ Listening to the story of Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate Bonfire Night.
√ Practising balancing skills in PE.
√ Seeing the exhibition and finding our wonderful work.
√ Saying and repeating words of body parts in French.
√ Listening to ‘The Christmas Story’ in RE.
Family discussion questions:
- Did you vote for Jack as a ‘good character’ or a ‘bad character’? Why?
- If 5 is the whole, what could the parts be?
- What adjectives could you use to describe the forest in the story of ‘Rapunzel’?
Looking forward:
Next week we will be looking at the features of writing in Traditional Tales and begin planning our writing of the story of ‘Rapunzel’.
In Maths we will begin to solve addition problems using drawings and moving onto number sentences.
In Geography we will begin to look at what a city, town, village and coast is like.
In Science we will look at the changes in trees from summer to autumn.
Reminders:
Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday (from this week) and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home, these can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained and /or the confidence of the child and will be tested informally (we call it a quiz) on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about- it gives the children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.
Book change on Thursday.
Please continue to read every night and practise the sound cards. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. I am so impressed with how many children have achieved the Reading Challenge so far.
