Y1 Friday 6th December 2024– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
We have had a great week in Year 1!
In Maths we have learnt how to cross out when taking away and used a number line to count backwards
In Science, we explored the different parts of plants through dissecting vegetables and looked at how the weather has changed from autumn to winter and what clothes we wear as it gets colder.
We have learnt to cut intricately and safely and quilled paper in D&T.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Cutting carefully and safely.
√ Showing how well we have learnt our spellings in our spelling test.
√ Identifying the different parts of vegetables.
√ Sorting vegetables based on their parts.
√ Crossing out to count backwards and seeing what is left.
√ Counting backwards on a number line.
√ Discussing how trees have changed from autumn to winter and how the weather is changing.
√ Practising for our Christmas performance.
√ Catching and throwing balls accurately in PE.
√ Learning about the Three King’s journey to Bethlehem in RE.
Family discussion questions:
- What type of vegetable is tenderstem broccoli? Carrot?
- What question could you ask a witch?
- How have the trees changed since autumn? Has the weather changed?
Looking forward:
Next week we will consolidate our maths learning with a quiz.
We will use atlases in Geography to help us name and locate the countries of the UK.
In Science we will learn about materials that are opaque, transparent and translucent.
We will be continuing our Nativity rehearsals.
In DT we will explore moving pictures and continue with our quilling project.
In PHSE we will be looking at the story of ‘Ten Little Pirates’.
Reminders:
- Christmas Shop- please send money in a named envelope or purse, with a list of who is being bought for and a named bag by Monday 9th December ready for Christmas Shop.
- Christmas Dinner- Friday 13th December- please bring in a named cracker. PE kit to be worn but Christmas headwear can be worn at lunchtime.

Nativity
Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th December 9:30am in the Village Hall.
Spelling and phonics/handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 spellings home and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. There may be some repeated words if these have not been applied to our writing in class. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.
Book change on Thursday.
Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge.
If you have any questions please ask
Thank you for your continued support
