Y1 Friday 6th May 2022– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
Another great week in Year 1!
In English we have begun to explore ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ to inspire our writing.
In Maths we have continued to look at arrays and used ‘lots of’ to show we can do this in 2 ways.
In Science we have dissected a flower-identified and named the parts before discovering what each parts job is.
In Geography we have learnt about aerial views and used Lego to help us make a map of our classroom.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Using columns and rows to make arrays.
√ Solving ‘lots of’ questions by drawing arrays.
√ Dissecting flowers, identifying each part and their job.
√ Making predictions about what our story of the term is about using pictures from the story.
√ Exploring the meaning of words and phrases as part of group.
√ Using a picture to inspire and generate adjectives to describe nouns.
√ Throwing a ball using over arm throws in PE.
√ Reading words with the alternative ‘ee’ (as in seal, here and unhappy) and ’ch’ (as in rich and future) sounds.
√ Using Lego to make an aerial view map of our classroom.
Family discussion questions:
- What adjective could you use to describe the moon?
- Can you share 5 equally? Why not?
- What is an aerial map?
Looking forward:
Next week we will begin analysing text based on ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, retrieving answers from the shared text and sequencing the story.
In Maths we will look at grouping and sharing before consolidating our multiplication and division unit.
In Geography we will be making an aerial view map of our infant site.
In Science we will be naming parts of plants we can eat and using this information to design sandwiches for D&T, based on what we would like in a sandwich.
Reminders:
- I have put together a Phonics activity booklet- games, phoneme spotters, reading of real and fake words. I thought this would be something fun for the children to enjoy and to reinforce their Phonics learning.
- Our 14 day Reading Challenge has started again, so please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday
- Alongside the spelling and handwriting/Phonics homework, I have sent home Maths homework. This will be marked together so any misconceptions can be address. Please complete this in pencil.
- PE this half term is Friday- please wear PE kits on this day.
If you have any questions please ask.
Thanks again for your continued support.
Kind regards and take care
Ms Cummins
