Y1 Friday 6th November 2020– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

What a great first week back for our autumn 2 term- great enthusiasm and attitude to learning!

In Maths we have begun to look at part whole models to help us begin to see how amounts can be split. We have used lots of practical equipment to help us with this.

In English we have been inspired by the book ‘Rapunzel’ by Bethan Woollvin. We have explored the book through Shared Reading and begun to learn the story through the use of a story map and following it with actions. We had an interesting debate related to our Traditional Tales unit of writing. We discussed ‘good’ and ‘bad’ characters and we were torn as class as to which side Jack from ‘Jack in the Beanstalk’ should be in. We decided to have a class vote and used ballot boxes to help us. Interestingly, it was a 50/50 split with some great explanations for our opinion.

In History we finished our topic by designing a toy from the future by using all the things we have learnt about old and new toys. We began our Geography topic by thinking about a place we have recently visited and what we could see there.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Being Traditional Tale Detectives when solving clues to guess the story.

√ Learning the story of Rapunzel through actions.

√ Learning how to use a part whole model to partition numbers.

√ Reading and spelling CCVC words.

√ Voting in a class ballot about whether Jack was a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ character and having a class debate about it.

√ Designing a toy from the future.

√ Thinking about where we have visited and what we have seen.

√ Describing characters from Rapunzel.

Family discussion questions:

  • Did you vote for Jack as a ‘good character’ or a ‘bad character’? Why?
  • If 5 is the whole, what could the parts be?
  • What adjectives could you use to describe the forest in the story of ‘Rapunzel’?

Looking forward:

Next week we will be looking at the features of writing in Traditional Tales and begin planning our writing of the story of ‘Rapunzel’.

In Maths we will begin to solve addition problems using drawings and moving onto number sentences.

In Geography we will begin to look at what a city, town, village and coast is like.

Reminders:

Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday (from this week) and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home, these can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.

Book change on Thursday.

Please continue to read every night and practise the sound cards. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge.

If you have any questions please ask

Thank you for your continued support
