Y1 Friday 7th May 2021– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
Another super week in Year 1!
In English we have continued to use the text of Hermelin. We have looked at features of the text, sequenced the story and written noun phrases to describe.
In Maths we have continued our multiplication unit by securing our knowledge of arrays to find ‘lots of’.
In Science we explored our school grounds and found wild plants. We drew and labelled the wild plants we found.
In Geography we have begun look at aerial view and used Lego to make a aerial map of our classroom.
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Sequencing the main parts of the Hermelin story.
√ Working together in pairs to make arrays practically and drawing them- ‘lots of’.
√ Spotting lots of wild plants in our school grounds.
√ Using our knowledge of wild plants to draw a wild garden scene.
√ Understanding what an aerial view is and using this to make a map of our classroom using Lego.
√ Reading and writing split digraphs to secure our understanding.
√ Practising handwriting the letter ‘h’.
√ Enjoying listening to the story of Greta and the Giants- all about climate change.
√ Balancing and moving in PE.
Family discussion questions:
- Draw 3 lots of 2. What does it equal?
- What adjectives could you use to describe Emily’s attic?
- What is the difference between wild and garden plants?
Looking forward:
Next week in English we will be planning our detective story.
In Maths we will be finding doubles using arrays to help before beginning to look at division through sharing.
In Science we will be looking foods that come from plants.
In Geography we will be exploring our school grounds and drawing an aerial map to show what we can see.
Reminders:
- Spelling and handwriting homework was sent home Friday 7th May. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3,5 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 14th May.
- Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 14th May- this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
- Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
- I have sent home the 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward)- I will be setting 5 or 7 each week from next week- I will send them on the usual spelling cover write check sheet.
