Y1 Friday 9th July 2021– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
Another great week in Year 1!
In English we have sequenced the story and looked at the features. Then we used this information to help us to plan our own portal story.
In Maths we have looked at ordering events before telling the time to the hour and half an hour.
In Science we sorted recycling by looking at labels then explored the impact of sea pollution on sea animals.
In Art and D&T we used our weaving skills to weave fish and the fence to signify the sea.
Everyone tried so hard during our Sports Day! I am so proud of the whole class- photos will be put onto the class page!

Family discussion questions:
- Where are the big and little hands at 5 o’clock? Half past 8?
- How did the character of your story travel? What land did they go to?
- Have a look recycling items at your house – can all items be recycled? How do you know?
Looking forward:
Next week we will be writing our own story and preparing things for transition.
In all other areas of the curriculum, we will be doing quizzes and lots of discussions to consolidate our learning.
Reminders:
PE kits are only to be worn on Friday’s for this half term- normal school uniform every Tuesday please.
- Spelling homework and handwriting was sent home Friday 9th July. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 16th
- Maths homework is now being sent home and DUE in FRIDAY 16th July - this is based on work we have covered in class. If this can be completed as independently as possible.
- Reading is so vital as it underpins all aspects of learning. This is why reading every night is extremely important. Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual.
- Please look at 100 HFW that Year 1 should be able to read (most are straight forward).
If you have any questions please ask.
Thanks again for your continued support.
Kind regards and take care
Ms Cummins
