Y4 Friday 1st March - Looking Back And Forth

Friday 1st March  2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

Thank you for coming to the York presentation on Friday, I do hope you found it useful.

In English this week the children, began looking at persuasive texts.  They studied an example text ‘Free Chocolate For Teachers!’ – this was met with mixed feelings ,as they felt children should also receive these treats!  We then planned a text to try and persuade a Tudor monarch to buy some of our Tudor clothes that we  had designed.

The class worked on decimals this week in maths.  As well as looking at decimals in sequence, they looked at the different values. Finally on Friday we divided and multiplied numbers by ten, giving us decimal answers.

In the afternoons, we looked at the characters of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Cardinal Woolsey, exploring their attitudes, as well as the children’s attitudes towards them. In our history topic we talk a lot about empathy (walking in someone else’s shoes), this was a great activity for this.

In science, the class looked at electrical conductors and insulators. The children made circuits and tested out different materials – there were some surprises.  Some children brought their cool electrical kits from home to show us.  On Wednesday, Mr Capewell from H.C.C.S came again to teach the children a session of Hi5.

Year 4 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • Dance with Miss Oakes
  • Netball with Mr Capewell
  • Show and Tell
  • Fractions and decimals
  • Computing with Mrs Cooper – using Logo
  • Designing my own Tudor clothes

Family discussion questions:

  • Why did Henry VIII divorce Catherine?
  • What reasons did Cardinal Woosley give as to why the marriage between Henry and Catherine was not allowed?
  • How long did Anne wait to marry Henry?
  • What happened to Cardinal Woosley?
  • How do you times or divide by 10?
  • What does empathy mean?
  • What can you remember are the features of a persuasive text?
  • What is a conductor and insulator of electricity?
  • Were there any surprises?

Looking forward:

This week, in English we will continue to write our persuasive letters to a Tudor monarch.  The children would like to persuasive letters to people who post nasty things on the internet.   In Maths, we will continue to work on decimals, looking at multiplication and division, as well as decimal equivalents. In science, the children will be making their own circuit boards.  In history, we will begin to look at Elizabeth I as a monarch.  In design and technology – the children made some initial design ideas for their Tudor money pouches.  This week they will finalise their designs.  Hopefully in a few weeks we will need some keen volunteers to help us when we get to the sewing stage.  This will be for the last hour on a Friday.  If you think that you might be available, could you let me know.
