Y4 Friday 10th January 2020 - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 10th January 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children began a new text in English, on Friday we revealed it’s name.  The book is ‘The Whale’ by Vita Murrow.  It is a beautifully illustrated book and we will be using it for writing scene settings.

In maths, the children worked on subtraction, using more than one exchange (borrowing in old money!)

In the afternoons we began our new topic on the Anglo Saxons.  We also reorganised the reading library and used our ZPD’s to choose a new book on the Accelerated Reader programme.  A letter will be coming home this week – to explain further the Accelerated Reader programme.

Questions to ask at home:

  • Who arrived after the Romans left Britain?
  • What artefacts did you look at that were left behind by the Anglo Saxons?
  • What you do you think it means?
  • What is the mystery animal in your new English text?
  • What does the word ominous and torrents mean?
  • What does the word ‘exchange’ mean in maths?
  • What can you remember about the topic on mountains?
  • Which is the tallest mountain in England?
  • Which is the tallest mountain in the British Isles?
  • What is the largest and youngest mountain range in the world?

Highlights of the week:

  • Tag rugby with the Premier Sports coaches
  • Working on fronted adverbials in English
  • Getting my ZPD and the new reading system
  • Football with my friends at break time
  • Using exchanges in subtraction in maths

Looking forward:

We will continue to work on scene settings, using the book ‘The Whale’.  We will move onto measurement in maths, looking at kilometres.  There will be further investigations into the world of the Anglo Saxons.  We will investigate where they came from? Also why they arrived on the Britain’s shores?

Could you please make sure that your child has their P.E. kit in school on Friday from Tag Rugby.  We will be outside(unless it is pouring), so warmer jogging trousers and a jumper are preferable.
