Y4 Friday 14th February - Looking Back and Forth
Friday 14th February 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4
Looking back:
The children completed their newspaper articles inspired from the book ‘The Whale’. The children explored using reported and direct speech, as well as punctuating this accurately.
In maths, we began to look at multiplication – in particular using the expanded and short methods of multiplication of 2 digit by 1 digit numbers.
In the afternoons; we completed our electrical quizzes and had a little go on them. We learnt how the Anglo Saxons converted to Christianity and some of the significant figures of the Christian faith in Anglo Saxon times. We also studied runes, a written symbolic language that conveyed meaning – very much like modern day Emoji’s!
On Thursday, the school worked as juniors and infants to look at the meaning behind ‘diversity and equality’. The children really seemed to engage in the activities and hopefully understood the meaning of these words and their significance.
Questions to ask at home:
- How do you use the expanded method in multiplication?
- How do you use the short method of multiplication?
- Which one do you prefer?
- Who were the missionaries that you looked at in history this week?
- What did you do in Tag Rugby this week?
- Which skill do you think you improved on?
- What does diversity mean?
- What does equality mean?
- What was your favourite activity in the afternoon and why?
Highlights of the week:
- Tag Rugby
- English – writing my newspaper
- Using the short multiplication method
- Using the long multiplication method
- Looking at Anglo Saxon runes
- Making the quizzes
- The Equality and Diversity afternoon
Looking forward:
This week, the children begin a new topic on myths and legends, using Norse myths as a stimulus. In maths, we will continue to work on multiplication and division; looking at as written methods and multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers by 1 number, as well as division methods. This week, the children will investigate the finds of Sutton Hoo, as well as find out about Alfred the Great, and why he was so Great?
Could you please make sure that your child has their P.E. kit in school on Friday from Lacrosse. We will be outside (unless it is pouring), warmer jogging trousers, spare socks, a bag to put wet trainers into, and a jumper. The children also have gym and dance on a Tuesday and will need shorts for this.
