Y4 Looking Back and Forth - 31st January

Friday 31st  January 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

In English, the children continued to use the text ‘The Whale’, this time we looked at the newspaper article at the beginning of the book.  We spent the week looking at the different features of the newspaper.

We also spent a wonderful hour everyday working with Andy Silver from POP UK!  We learnt lots of new songs and enjoyed the sessions immensely.

In maths, the children started to look at multiplication and division.  The TTRockstars work has certainly paid off.  You can see it in their confidence when tackling new concepts in this topic.  Please make sure your child is regularly accessing this fantastic tool.  A daily short session of 10 minutes makes such a difference to their confidence when tackling multiplication problems.

In the afternoons; we explored maps and found lots of place in the local area that have Anglo Saxon place names. Some of the children were starting to see the patterns in where the settlements were.  The children also looked at the food that Anglo Saxons ate and designed their own Anglo Saxon feast for King Offa!

Questions to ask at home:

  • Who was King Offa?
  • Why do we still know about him today?
  • What foods did the Anglo Saxons eat?
  • What was your favourite POP Uk song?
  • Show me your moves!
  • Can you tell me a place nearby that has an Anglo Saxon place name?
  • How many can you remember?

Highlights of the week:

  • POP UK it was amazing!
  • Creating an Anglo Saxon feast!
  • Playing with my friends
  • Doughnuts!
  • TTRockstars!
  • Going to Young Voices
  • Tag Rugby with the coaches - passing the ball whilst running

Looking forward:

This week the Book Fair will be on, after school from 3.30pm until 4pm in the Junior Hall.

Also this week, we have the POP UK Concert on Thursday afternoon – you should have received your ticket already.

The children will be continue to look at newspaper reports and write their own fictional newspaper article about sightings of a mysterious sea-creature. In maths, we will continue to work on multiplication and division; looking at factor pairs, efficient multiplication as well as written methods.  This week, the children will learn more about King Offa the Anglo Saxon king as well as exploring switches, conductors and insulators in science.

Could you please make sure that your child has their P.E. kit in school on Friday from Tag Rugby.  We will be outside(unless it is pouring), so warmer jogging trousers and a jumper are preferable.
