Y5 19.7.19 Looking Back and Forth

Friday 19th July 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 5

Looking back:

To coincide with Nelson Mandela Day, the children have studied the life of Nelson Mandela and written some wonderful acrostic poems. We also did some fantastic news reports based on the Apollo 11 Moon landings to commemorate 50 years since this incredible event. Here are some of the children’s comments:

Nelson Mandela:

I really respect how he fought for civil rights.

I respect how he fought for peace and never gave up.

I felt sad for him because of the sacrifices he made.

He was incredibly inspirational.

Moon Landings:

I learned a lot about the Space Race and the 1960s.

It seemed an impossible task.

It was amazing that they did it with the technology that they had.

I enjoyed learning about the problems they encountered and overcame.

They had to have nerves of steel. No-one really knew what would happen

It has interested me in astronomy.

Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • We loved the Year 6 Hat-walk!
  • We found the discussion with the PSCO about anti-social behaviour really useful.

Family discussion questions:

Ask your children…

  • To tell you what they have learned about Nelson Mandela.
  • To tell you what they learned about the Moon landings.

Looking forward:

Unbelievably we enter our final week of the year and we are all looking forward to breaking up on Wednesday. It has been a fantastic year and the class have been a wonderful year group to teach. They have been so enthusiastic and they really look out for each other too. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for their support and wish families a happy summer. Best Wishes for a fantastic Year 6.
