Y5 24.1.20 Looking Back and Forth
Friday 24th January 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 5
Looking back:
It’s been a great week in Year 5. The children have been undertaking some really interesting foundation work. In geography, we have researched estuaries and the wildlife that lives there. In history, we looked at which countries were occupied during WWII.
The children are really enjoying Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Billy the Kid’, which is about a footballer who joins up for war in 1939. They have produced their own great writing based on this.
Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:
- We enjoyed researching wildlife that lives in an estuary.
- We found the maths work (area and perimeter) challenging, but fun.
Family discussion questions:
- Ask the children to see if they can still remember the stages of a river. We covered this last week!
- Ask the children to explain to you the events that led up to the start of WWII.
Looking forward:
Next week, we have ’Pop UK’ in school. They will be taking classes and teaching them songs, ready for a whole school concert in a couple of weeks. Some of you may remember we did something similar a couple of years ago, and the children enjoyed it so much.
In maths, we will be exploring percentages for the first time this year. In our WWII work, we will be moving on to look at what it was like to live through the Blitz.
The children are now signed up to the Accelerated Reader programme. Information coming home soon.
Don’t forget, the children also have access to Times-tables Rockstars and can be practising their times-tables at home if they are able to get on-line.
Wider Opportunities:
Children are currently learning ‘Michael Oliver’ and ‘Mini March’. The note names are at the bottom of the music to help.
