Y5 28.2.20 Looking Back and Forth

Friday 28th February 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 5

Looking back:

It’s been a great first week back after the half-term break. The children have started a new writing topic, imagining some diary entries when war was declared in WWII. In maths, we have undertaken a week of work on time and timetables. In our geography work, we looked at the issue of flooding and the impact of flooding.

Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • We really enjoyed producing our own Henry Moore inspired Blitz artwork.
  • We are enjoying the book ‘Rose Blanche’ in our guided reading sessions.
  • We found learning about evacuation interesting.

Family discussion questions:

  • Ask the children what they learned about evacuation during WWII.
  • Ask the children to tell you what they learned about the impact of flooding on a community.

Looking forward:

Next week, the children will be writing a diary entry imagining themselves as an evacuated child. In maths, we will be looking at strategies for division. In our geography work, we will be undertaking some interesting work linked to our twin school in South Africa. ElizabethFontein have kindly sent us some information about local rivers in their area for us to study.

The children are now signed up to the Accelerated Reader programme and complete a quiz on-line at school when they finish a book.

Don’t forget, the children also have access to Times-tables Rockstars and can be practising their times-tables at home if they are able to get on-line.

Wider Opportunities:

Children are currently learning ‘Elevator Song’ (Low note on the 1st line, high note on the third line).

Easy 5 note tune:

Brass: C D E F G   Glock and Flutes: B(sharp) C D E(sharp) F

Sax: G A B C D     Clarinet: C D E F G
