Y5 4.3.22 Weekly Update

Friday 4th March 2022 – Y5 Weekly Update

Looking back:

It was lovely to see the children returning to school in such an enthusiastic manner after the half-term break. This week we have started a new writing unit based on the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and the book ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’. We have completed our Ancient Greece history topic, and we did some lovely work based on the Eric Carle book ‘The Man Who Painted a Blue Horse’. On World Book Day, the children discussed their favourite books and designed a book spine. Throughout the day we watched video clips of famous authors discussing their writing process.

We have watched quite a few of the children’s presentations and it’s been wonderful to learn a little bit about their hobbies/interests.

Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • We really enjoyed the opening chapters of ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.
  • We feel much more confident with fractions in our maths work.
  • We enjoyed World Book Day.

Family discussion questions:

  • Ask the children for some facts about Ancient Greece to show what they learned during our topic.
  • Ask the children if they can remember why Eric Carle wrote ‘The Man Who Painted a Blue Horse’.

Looking forward:

Next week we will be starting a unit of work about Burwardsley in our Geography lessons. We will be exploring road maps, Ordnance Survey maps, compass points and grid references. We’ll then put some of these skills into good use during the residential visit.

In our maths work, we are moving on to decimals. In English, we will continue to explore the features of The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Have a great weekend!
