Y5 Weekly Update 16.6.23
Friday 16th June 2023 – Y5 Weekly Update
Looking back:
What a brilliant week it’s been in Year 5. It’s been lovely to welcome the South African children to the school, and the Year 5s have enjoyed meeting them and quizzing them about life in South Africa. We also have the Bridgewater Hall visit yesterday – it was a really fabulous experience. The children were impecably behaved throughout and a pleasure to take.
We did another thought provoking lesson about the Windrush Generation, writing an imagined diary entry. In English, we have been reading more of King Kong by Anthony Browne, and the children are loving this book. We have done some work describing the main characters and exploring language techniques. In maths, we concluded our ‘shape’ unit of work, and will move on to position and direction next week. In history, we started our local history topic by creating a timeline of the main events in Goostrey’s history.
Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:
- We loved meeting the South African children and learning all about them.
- We’ve really enjoyed the Georgia O’Keeffe artwork with Mrs Riddell.
- We enjoyed the visit to the Bridgewater Hall and it was great to listen to a live orchestra.
Family discussion questions:
- Can the children remember any key events or dates in the timeline of Goostrey history?
- Ask the children what they have learned about Georgia O’Keeffe’s artwork.
Looking forward:
We are looking forward to another week with the children from South Africa. On Thursday we be will doing some artwork with them, along with other joint activities during the week, including some dancing!
In maths, we are moving on to position and direction and doing some work with grids. In English, the children will be planning their own story based on ‘King Kong’. In history, the children will be comparing maps of Goostrey over different eras and seeing how the village has changed.
Enjoy the weekend!
