Y5 Weekly Update 17.2.23

Friday 17th February 2023 – Y5 Weekly Update

Looking back:

It’s been a great last week of the half-term. The children produced some poignant and reflective writing based on the powerful book, ‘Rose Blanche’. In RE, the children practised some note-taking skills, comparing sacred texts from different religions. In maths, we have continued with our fractions unit, learning how to compare and order fractions. In science, we explored how we might separate sand and salt from water.

Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • We really liked the book, ‘Rose Blanche’ and enjoyed presented our writing.
  • We are enjoying the ‘Materials’ science topic.
  • It was interesting learning about WWII rationing.

Family discussion questions:

  • Can the children show you our strategies to order fractions from smallest to largest?
  • Can the children tell you how we separated sand, salt and water?

Looking forward:

After half term we will be writing a poem based on some of the Henry Moore artwork the children have been producing with Mrs Riddell on a Wednesday afternoon. We then start of new writing topic based on a really thought provoking picture book.

In maths, we have one more week of fractions – looking at strategies for adding and subtracting fractions.

In science, we are setting up an investigation to study the effects of rusting.

In our history topic, we will be looking at the events which led to the end of WWII and VE Day.

Don't forget it is World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March. Children are invited to wear comfy clothes for reading, and bring in their favourite book.

Have a lovely weekend and half-term!
