Y5 Weekly Update 3.3.23
Friday 3rd March 2023 – Y5 Weekly Update
Looking back:
It was great to welcome the children back after the half-term break and they have been working hard with lots of enthusiasm. This week we started a wonderful new book in our English lessons, called ‘The Promise’. The children also wrote fantastic poems based on some of the Henry Moore artwork they have been undertaking with Mrs Riddell, on Wednesday afternoons. In maths, we have completed a long topic of fractions work – I have been so impressed with the children’s attitude to some quite tricky work. On Monday, we did some important work about online security in a e-safety lesson.
On Tuesday, we were delighted to have Mrs Hemming in class talking about the wonderful children's book she has written. More information about the book will be in the newsletter!
Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:
- We enjoyed the beginning of ‘The Promise’.
- We really liked writing our Henry Moore inspired poems.
- We are interested to see what happens in our rust investigation in science.
Family discussion questions:
- Can the children remember why some objects go rusty?
- Can the children show you how to add fractions with different denominators?
- Can the children remember the events that led to the end of WWII?
Looking forward:
Next week, we will be completing our WWII topic by writing an imagined VE Day diary entry. We’ll then produce a page of ‘top-ten facts’ about WWII to remind the children what we have learned.
In English, we will continue to immerse ourselves in the book, ‘The Promise’. We will explore writing techniques used by the author.
In maths, we move on to a topic on decimals and percentages.
In science, the children will be learning all about why things burn and the ‘fire triangle’.
Year 5 Parents' Evenings will take place on Monday13th March and Monday 20th March, appointments will go live Monday 6th March (7pm) until Friday 10th.
Have a lovely weekend!
