Year 1 we 8th December
Hi All,
Christmas not far now!!!
This week in English, we will be finishing the topic on traditional stories.
In the reading records there are lots of entries for traditional and fairy stories. Thank you for supporting the learning in school.
If you have a chance to look at traditional stories with your child, this would really support their learning in school.
The stories we have looked at in school very often have a repeating theme (e.g. Gingerbread man meets somebody who says ‘I want to eat you.’ He then runs off being chased by an increasingly large group of hungry individuals – he then will say (could be accused of saying it smugly!) ‘Run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me! I am the gingerbread man.’
Traditional tales very often have a meaning to them or moral. This would prove as an excellent discussion point after reading the story. Can your child work out what the lesson or moral is?
You could:
- Look at how traditional tales always seem to begin (once upon a time or something else?)
- Look at how they end – how is this different than the fairy stories they read?
- The characters are they clever, sly or trusting.
- Are there any common themes that you and your child notice (animals that talk, sly foxes, silly people, repeating patterns in the story)
- Could you child retell the story to you.
- Could you think of 3 words to describe each of the main characters?
In this work in English we have been looking at ‘soft g’ (making a j sound), also High Frequency Words – for example live, want, when, came, make, there, you, your. As well as contractions – e.g. can’t – can not and I’m – I am.
In maths, we will be continuing working on addition and subtraction. This week we will be focusing on counting on from the bigger number for addition. Not just counting the groups.
In the afternoon it is the nativity – we hope you enjoy it!
