Year 4 Looking Back and Forth 8th November 2019

Friday 8th November 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children began the week well and we began a new unit of work in English.  This is based on the story book ‘Leaf’ by Sandra Deickmann.  The children explored the illustrations, which are vibrant and rich.  They considered what they thought were the themes of the book and this was before reading a word!  We also looked at fronted adverbials in grammar.  In fact we only actually read the book on Friday!

In maths, we looked at partitioning numbers to 10,000.  If you have time at home is you could draw a line like the ones below and ask you child to put 4 digit numbers onto the line (given by you) and then explain why they placed them there? It would really help in quickening responses and supporting reasoning in maths.

Where would 3500 be?

4300?

8750?

1250?

1225?

9900?

We began to look at 'states of matter' in science, as well as programming in Computing.  With Mrs Benson, we learned songs from different cultures, which the class picked up really quickly and sang well.

Questions to ask at home:

  • What is a fronted adverbial?
  • What are the three types of fronted adverbial?
  • Who is Leaf?
  • Why was Leaf called Leaf by the other animals? (two possible answers)
  • What does rifled mean?
  • What does deserted mean?
  • What does shunned mean?
  • What does matted mean?
  • What skills did you practise in swimming this week?

Highlights of the week for the children:

  • Swimming at Sandbach
  • Computing with Mrs Cooper
  • Creating my emotions poem for Leaf
  • Partitioning big numbers in maths
  • Reading the Leaf story
  • Playing football with friends

Looking forward:

This week we will continue our work on Leaf and write our own versions of an outsider narrative.

We will continue to look at place value in maths.  In science we will continue to look at changing states and work on some very bizarre shapes (ask your child on Wednesday – what they were?)

This week we will begin to practise the carols and songs for the Christmas Carol Service.  The dates for all the important events coming up are on the newsletter front page.
