Year 4 - Looking Back and Forth - Friday 6th January

Friday 6th January– Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

This week, it was wonderful to see the children back after a good winter holiday.  It was a relief to see a lot of them in finer fettle after the heavy cold that blasted us all before the holiday.

We began the new term in great spirits.  In My Happy Mind, we looked at appreciation and what that meant.  This was a great discussion starter, particularly after the winter break.  The children showed a lot of appreciation; for seeing their families, eating great food and of course Christmas gifts!

We continued to work on multiplication in maths, this is going to be a long unit of work for us, as it is a main focus in Year 4, unsurprisingly.  We began a new topic in our English work also, this is a real contrast from the last book, Whale.  We discussed the pictures glimpses from the book, that we have seen so far, the class are eager to find out more….

The children began their new topic on Anglo-Saxons, you will hear a lot about these in the next couple of weeks.  In science, they went on an interesting Sound walk around the school.

The class began their basketball P.E. sessions with Mr Biggs on Friday as well.

Questions to ask at home

  • What was your first week back like?
  • What do you think your new book is going to be about?
  • What did you hear on your sounds walk?
  • What do you know about the Anglo-Saxons so far?
  • What do you want to know about them?

Children’s highlights of the week

  • Lunch!
  • Learning about our new book
  • Looking at the pictures of our new book
  • Soundwalk
  • Starting our new class book ‘The Borrowers’
  • E. basketball with Mr Biggs

Looking forward:

The children, learning more about their new book, as well working on fronted adverbials in English.  In maths, the class will continue to work on multiplication facts.  In history, the children will be learning about the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, as well as everyday life in an Anglo-Saxon village.

In French, the children will be learning about pocket money and currency, as well as revising French numbers.
