Year 6 - Looking Back and Forth - Friday 21st May 2021

Y6 – Friday 21st May 2021 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 6

Looking back:

The highlight from this last week has been – amongst other things – our turns in the swimming pool.  Whilst it’s never “two weeks the same” in Year 6, we’ve never been swimming ‘on site’ before.  There are some great quotes below from our pupils about what it was like.  Having studied volume and capacity in maths, we discussed how much water might have been used to fill our pool. There are some photos on this week’s gallery page for you to see what it’s like.  Take a “dip” and have a look.

Back in the classroom, we’ve been studying newspaper reports with a view to writing our own.  Angles (or in some books “angels”) have been our maths focus for the week.  The sewing machine has been given another run and this week, the class took a look at some home-made clothes for dolls, made my Mrs Cooper’s own grandmother.

We rounded off our topic on North America with a “Top Ten Facts” and created Scratch games to play with ICT. Hindu and Christian weddings were discussed for RE and much music was created and performed with Mrs Sant.

On Friday, we looked at quotes from young people – collated by BBC Newsround – about who they felt were inspirational people.  We then thought about who inspired us. Some of these are below.

Have a great week – we’ll be back again next Friday.

  • Lots of splashing – MW
  • I learnt a lot – LH
  • It was tiring
  • Good to learn how to “butterfly” properly

Year 6 – Who inspires us:

  • CP I’m inspired to play football because my brother plays
  • MW I’m inspired to be a baker because my mum is really good at baking
  • EC Sankichi Hinodeya inspires me because he can make cool mangas based on things I like and it teaches me how to draw well
  • HT Raheem Sterling because when I met him, he was really nice.  He inspired me to play football
  • AWG My mum inspires me because she taught me how to draw and inspired me to have my career in digital art and realism
  • JMcK Joe Wicks because I love sport and fitness
  • JP I want to be either a professional rugby player or a business man.  My dad inspires me because that is what he did.
  • HG I have been inspired to be a doctor or vet by Dr. Chris and Dr. Xand.  I absolutely love their show “Operation Ouch”.  It’s fascinating – and gross.
  • IJ Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Sandler have inspired me to be an actor.
  • LP My Nana inspires me – she lived until she was 91 years old.  She went so far in life and I want to too.
  • AS I am inspired by Tom curry as he is a very good rugby player.  My dad too as he is an engineer and when I was younger, he used to take me to his work.  I loved looking around and it was just amazing.
  • TM I am inspired by Tom Cruise because in acting, he does all of his stunts in real life
  • PR My mum lets me go to fitness and I am so good now.  I would never change anything.
  • NC My brother inspires me to do art and music.  Also, Johnny Depp because he has been in so many good movies.
  • FS I am inspired my Terry Pratchett and my dad because they are both authors and I love their stories
  • DA I am inspired to be a goalkeeper by Neur
  • RG The person who inspires me is Jack Downer.  He is the Street Panna World Champion.  He is so dedicated to his training and has trained every day for 7 years.  It is amazing to see his progression and shows how good you can get at something.  All you need to do is work hard.
  • JMcL My entire family because they have all been mathematicians and that sets me on the path of being a financial trader.
  • NN My brother J because he does amazing artwork and he sets an example for his friend.  They both have Downs Syndrome and my brother helps his friend around the whole school.
  • EW My dad inspires me – I want to learn to ski, fish and sail like him.  My cousin is an inspiration too for being in the army.

Family discussion questions:

  • What is the name for two angles that are ‘side by side’ on a straight line. What two things do they share?
  • Tell me about the dolls and clothes Mrs Cooper shared with you.
  • What are some of your Top Ten Facts about North America

Looking forward:

  • We are very much looking forward to our final week of this half term. We will be completing our newspaper reports for English and continuing with shape in maths.  Our cushions will (hopefully) be completed for sewing and we have one more session in the pool (two groups on Wednesday and two groups on Friday afternoons).
